Steam Setup Guide (Codeweavers ™ Crossover 25 Update)

Steam on Mac OS!  (Updated For Crossover 25!)

Hello everyone!  Here is a new and updated guide for setting up Steam on Codeweavers™ Crossover.  This is updated for the New version 25! There is a previous guide for those still using Crossover 24 over here.  You can see the video guide for Installing Steam on Crossover 24 below:

Installation on Crossover 25

Now that the older installation method is cleared away, let's take a look at the newer method.  With this method, we need to get to the installation setup.  So, select "Install" and Search for Steam among the options for Preset Installations, also known as Crossties.  I have highlighted the Steam Installation in this screenshot.

The Steam Installation should appear like this setup below

Now, Install Steam, including using your email to sign in

  Installing Additional Libraries and Dependencies

The good news is, you have now installed Steam.  There are a few additional dependencies to look out for to get a number of games running well on the service.  The first part is the fonts.  Steam and the Games run on Steam use a particular set of Fonts known as Core Fonts for displayed Text in their games, so first install the Core Fonts, as shown below.

Now with the Fonts installed, you should install Direct X For Modern Games.  This installation takes care of Direct X for Applications which use the Operating Systems of Windows XP and above.  So you should use the setup as shown below by searching for "Direct X For Modern Games".  Select Steam as the Bottle into which you will install Direct X For Modern Games.

Now, that you have installed Direct X into Steam, it's time to Install DXVK.  DXVK is a key component in getting more recent games running on Crossover, and getting more advanced options set up.  So, let's get going!  First Look up DXVK for Installation.  This is actually easier, as all three installations should be done into the Steam Bottle.

Now that you have installed DXVK, let's take a look at the advanced settings for Steam.  These Advanced Settings need a little adjustment depending on what kind of games you plan on playing on Steam.  So, let's take a look at the Advanced Settings.

The advanced settings Tab

There are three Settings in this tab.  Graphics refers to the graphics processing settings, it has Auto, D3DMetal, DXMT, DXVK, and Wine.  Default setting, which is recommended for most applications, is that of Auto, which will choose which processor to utilize for you, hence auto.  Two of these settings will only work on Apple Silicon computers, and those are D3DMetal and DXMT.  Now, on to Synchronization, there are three settings : Default, Esync, and Msync.  If you aren't sure, resort to Auto, some specific games on Steam, such as Halo : The Master Chief Collection, run with MSync activated.  Others use ESync.  Now for the final setting : High Resolution Mode.  In High Resolution Mode, you set the app to run at high resolutions such as 1080p or 4K.  Some games are meant to be run at high resolution, such as Age of Empires II : Definitive Edition, or Age of Empires III : Definitive Edition.  Overall, the games on Steam vary when it comes to which Advanced Settings should be checked, so check on more specific guides for individual games when it comes to the Advanced Settings.  Now, here are two guides for setting up some other games, Final Fantasy and Bethesda Games

Direct Media Libraries (Final Fantasy Games)

Now go to the Steam Bottle and enter wine configuration to manually install a few specific dependencies (.dlls)  In wine configuration, click on the "Libraries" tab as shown below.

Here are the .dlls so you can copy and paste them in easily.

dmband.dll
dmime.dll
dmloader.dll
dmstyle.dll
dmsynth.dll
dmusic.dll
eax.dll

Otherwise, type in the names of the files and click the "add" button as shown below

After you have added all the dependencies using this method, click the "Apply" button to confirm, and then go into Steam and Install the game with Steam, if you haven't already.  Then Steam should be set to play Final Fantasy Games.  Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII have been tested with more upcoming.

The Bethesda Audio Override

For Bethesda Games,  especially the Elder Scrolls and Fallout Games beginning with Fallout 3, you want to use a process which I will refer to as The Bethesda Audio Override.  The Bethesda Audio Override fixes issues if graphics and skippy sound by installing libraries which the initial install failed to include.

Now, in wine configuration, access the libraries tab.

The Libraries to add in using wine configuration are as follows:

x3daudio1_6
x3daudio1_7
xaudio2_6
xaudio2_7

Copy and Paste each of these libraries' Titles, click "Add", and Then after repeating for all of the missing libraries files, click  "apply" and "exit" to leave Wine Configuration and save the installed libraries.
