The Ultimate Guide to Fallout 1 Community Edition (Mac OS)
Let's Play Classic Fallout!
Alright, so there has been a brief introduction to playing Escape Velocity Nova and the Classic Escape Velocity Games using the Community Edition, I've decided to take a look at Fallout. Now, I have previously had a guide for Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4, which you can take a look at, along with a guide for setting up Steam, where you can play the games on Mac OS using Codeweavers Crossover. However, today I will be talking about how to run Fallout and Fallout 2 using the Community Editions for those games. The Community Edition is a launcher set to work with today's windows or mac OS operating systems. So, how to get the games working? Let's get started with the original Fallout!
Getting Started
To get started, you want to obtain a legally purchased, DRM-Free version of the game from GOG.com. If you have not obtained the GOG.com versions of the game you can find Fallout and Fallout 2 on their respective pages in the store at GOG.com. It isn't hard to register with GOG.com and also obtain their server application known as GOG Galaxy. There is also the gaming service known as Steam. After that, there's getting the games installed. First the Windows method, followed by the Mac OS method, which is more complex.
Windows Guide
With the Windows operating system, first you go and install the GOG.com or Steam version of the game, then you go and obtain the Community Edition Launcher of the Game. The page for the Community Edition should look like this:
Choose the latest release of the game for the Windows Operating system, download it and prepare to unzip or extract the following launcher file into the Fallout Folder on your computer. The Fallout Folder, assuming you have not altered the folder location after the Installation, should be found in the following locations for Steam or for GOG.com on your machine.
GOG.com Installation Location
drive_c/GOG Games/Fallout
Steam Installation Location
drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout
After extracting the Community Edition Launcher, titled "fallout-ce.exe" to the proper folder, use this file as the launcher for the game on Windows, and it should work just fine. You are good to go on Windows!
Mac OS Guide
So here, with Mac OS, the method is a bit more varied and complex. There is running the game directly on Mac OS, and there is running the game's Community Edition on Codeweavers Crossover. So, for simply running the the game in Mac OS, there is the same requirement of downloading the Installer for Windows on your machine, then using Terminal and Homebrew for Mac OS. The instructions are available below. The Community Edition Launcher works fine with the old Mac OS Native version of the game or the Installed Windows version of the game, using terminal and homebrew to install the game folder with the steps below:
NOTE: This Community Edition works fine on Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan) on either Intel or Apple Silicon Macs.
-
Use Windows installation as a base - it contains data assets needed to play. Copy
Fallout
folder somewhere, for example/Applications/Fallout
. -
Alternatively you can use Fallout from MacPlay/The Omni Group as a base - you need to extract game assets from the original bundle. Mount CD/DMG, right click
Fallout
->Show Package Contents
, navigate toContents/Resources
. CopyGameData
folder somewhere, for example/Applications/Fallout
. -
Or if you're a Terminal user and have Homebrew installed you can extract the needed files from the GoG installer:
$ brew install innoextract
$ innoextract ~/Downloads/setup_fallout_2.1.0.18.exe -I app
$ mv app /Applications/Fallout
-
Download and copy
fallout-ce.app
to this folder. -
Run
fallout-ce.app, this file, "fallout-ce.app is a launcher for Mac OS which runs the game in Mac OS operating Systems.
Now, you are set to play Fallout 1 on Mac OS
Codeweavers Crossover Method
Alright, so now, that the Native Mac OS Method has been taken care of, let's take a look at how we can get the game running using Codeweavers Crossover. Crossover is an emulator which runs Windows Applications on Mac OS or Linux Operating Systems by producing an emulated Windows Machine, and running the Windows Native Games through that emulator, or Virtual Windows Machine. Now for the Crossover Installation, you have the same prerequisites as if you were to install the game on Windows: Have the Community Edition for Windows, along with the Windows Installer for GOG.com downloaded on your computer.
Now, to begin the Installation, select Fallout for the Application presets or "CrossTies" of Fallout, or "Install New Application, either way, the setup should be similar to what is shown below, with the game installation set for Windows 7, 64-bit and the GOG.com Installer set as the Installer Disc or File, as shown below.
After the GOG.com Installation is complete, you need to get the unzipped windows version of Fallout Community Edition Launcher or fallout-ce.exe transferred into the Fallout Folder within the virtual windows machine. So, take a look over here for reference on how to access the folder, by opening the virtual c drive on your computer.
The location of the Fallout Game Folder in the c drive is as follows:
drive_c/GOG Games/Fallout
Transfer the file known as "fallout-ce.exe" which you unzipped earlier, over there.
For visual reference, see below.
Now with the file transferred to the folder, all you need to do is set up a command for the launcher, where you can easily open the Community Edition Launcher for Fallout.
This starts by hitting "Run Command" in the Bottle, as shown below with the red circle.
Follow up by selecting the Fallout-ce.exe file as the launcher, as shown below.
Now you should be done, with the following launcher to click every time you wish to play Fallout without worrying about the application being incompatible because either you don't have a Silicon Mac or you don't have a more recent version of Codeweavers Crossover than version 24. Take a look below.
