Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour Expansion Guide For Steam (Updated For Crossover 25!)

Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour Expansion!  (Crossover 25 Update)

Introduction

So, ever since the update of Codeweavers™Crossover 25, a number of games have become more compatible.  Among those now playable on Mac OS using Crossover with the new update is that of Command & Conquer Generals along with the Zero Hour Expansion!  Generals and the Zero Hour Expansion were a separate standalone entry in the franchise not related to Red Alert or Tiberium game series, but which carried on a number of mechanics which became a staple to future games in the series, such as garrisoning buildings, 3D gameplay environments, being able to garrison with almost any infantry type in structures, along with picking up scrapped remains of the destroyed vehicles as an "upgrade" to your own vehicles.  These gameplay mechanics would carry on into both the later entries in Red Alert 3 and its Expansion, along with Command & Conquer 3 : Tiberium Wars and it's own Kane's Wrath expansion as well!  Without much further ado, let's begin on a new and updated guide to getting this game running!

Installing Steam

There is an updated guide to how to set up Steam in Crossover 25.0.1.  There are two guides, depending on if you prefer a written or a video guide.

Settings

Now that we have Steam Properly Installed, let's take a look at the Advanced Settings for the bottle.  Generals and Zero Hour are not programmed to run in HD Graphics or run with DXVK active, the HD graphics part can be changed with mods, but that would be for another time.  Here we are looking at how the Steam Bottle should be set up in the Vanilla Version of the game.  Graphics Processing should be set to Automatic.  Automatic decides whether or not to engage DXVK as a new feature available in Crossover 25.  It's great but in some applications, you still need to activate DXVK to ensure the application works correctly.  In the case of Generals or the Zero Hour Expansion, it isn't needed as these games from 2003 and 2004 are pretty old games, even with their re-release on Steam.  Then there is the Esync or MSync for the synchronization mode.  There can either be no Synchronization mode or MSync, and the game should work just fine.   Finally, the game is not made to run in HD, unless you mod the game, so make sure the settings in Advanced Settings are correct for the Steam Bottle, take a look below for reference.
