The Ultimate Guide to Worms Ultimate Mayhem on Mac OS!

The Ultimate Guide to Worms Ultimate Mayhem on Mac OS!

Remember the Worms series of games?  Well, if you were looking for a way to get those games running on Mac OS, look no further than right here on the Radio Kaos Blog!  Worms was a series of turn based strategy games in which you controlled teams of worms using weapons on each other in a campaign, multiplayer, or against the computer, and tried to be the last team standing in the turn based firefight.  Worms was primarily a series of 2D games, but there were two Worms Games in the franchise : Worms 3D and Worms 4, which were combined into one collection of games on Steam with the release of Worms : Ultimate Mayhem!  Now, to cut to the chase, how do you get a game meant for Windows on Steam running on Mac OS? Well, here I offer the complete rundown to getting the game running on Mac OS through the use of Codeweaversâ„¢ Crossover!  Codeweavers Crossover is a porting software application that creates a virtual machine within a Mac OS or a Linux operating system, running applications, including games, originally meant for Windows on the operating System!  I will invite you, should you get the Crossover App, to also consider becoming a Bettertester!  As a Bettertester, you can provide guides and rate the performance of various applications in Mac OS or Linux via Codeweavers Crossover as a way to help other users or even the developers in their efforts to port across operating systems!

Installing Steam

This guide is for the version of the game available on Windows via Steam, Steam is a gaming service provided by Valve Software for games on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux operating systems.  I have two guides for Installing a Steam Bottle first, and those are available in video form as well as in written form on my Blog.

    Last Steps

Now that Steam is installed, there are a few more steps to go!  So, hold on and look at a quick visual guide on how the Steam and Application settings for Worms : Ultimate Mayhem should be set up!

So let's take a look at the Bottle Settings for the Steam Bottle.  First click on the Steam Bottle Tab on the left of the Crossover Window, then take a look at the Tab Labeled "Advanced Settings" on the right.  Shown below in red circles.

Now, that you have the Steam Bottle selected, take a look at the "Advanced Settings" Tab, Circled on the Right.  We will take a closeup at how the settings should be set in Steam to run Worms Ultimate Mayhem.  Set Graphics Processing to "Auto", Synchronization to "MSync" and High Resolution Mode should be switched off.  Now there you have it, folks, Steam is now properly set to play Worms!

Now, there is one last step to run worms, and that is in the launcher.  When you start up the game, you will be shown the settings.  You need to match up the resolution to that which you have set for your screen.  Without a matching resolution, the game will only show a partial screen and cursor movement for the mouse will be severely limited.  So, take a look here for some reference.

Now choose your resolution and refresh rate.  My Macbook has a native resolution of 2560 x 1600), so I will choose a lower resolution of 1440 x 900 as that is the same aspect ratio as the native resolution as a widescreen resolution.  Also 60 HZ or 60fps as that is the native framerate of my graphics processor.

Game Controller Setup

Now, also of note is that Worms : Ultimate Mayhem is compatible with Game Controllers, including the Dualshock Playstation Controllers, XBox Series S/X Controllers, and Nintendo Switch Controllers, along with the Steam Controller.  You can use all of these controllers on Steam with this game, and so I have provided a guide in written form on this blog for you in getting the controller(s) of your choice set up.  So check it out, if you prefer to use game controllers on Steam!
