A Guide to Setting Up Compatible Game Controllers on Steam

A Guide For Game Controllers on Steam

And so here, with my new Steam Guide, I decided to include a supplemental guide for using controllers for Steam Games, and what controllers work for Steam on Mac OS.  This includes Steam in a simulated Windows machine using Codeweavers Crossover, as well as Steam on Mac OS Natively.  So, without much further ado, let's take a look at getting a Steam Controller set up.
First part is the type of gaming controller involved.  Not all controllers work with Steam, there is the Steam Controller, which is the most certain bet.  But other than that, the XBox Series S/X Controller, the Dualshock 4/5 Controller, or the Nintendo Switch Controllers, can all connect to the Mac using Bluetooth, and be setup on games in Steam which are compatible with gaming controllers.  The Following Games are common examples of Steam Games which work with Gaming Controllers which I have tested so far : Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Castlevania Lords of Shadow : Mirror of Fate, Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2, and additional tests will be done for gaming controllers with the testing of additional games on Steam.
In order to know if a game is compatible with a controller on Steam, take a look at the game's page.  For example, we will take a look at Final Fantasy VII here.

Click on the "i" button to access the information tab, and take a look to the right to see if the game in Steam page for the game shows controller support.  If it does, then it is compatible with gaming controllers.  The "Full Controller Support" indicator shows that the XBox, Steam, Playstation, or Nintendo Switch bluetooth controllers work with this game on Steam.  The "Dualshock Support" indicator shows that the game is compatible with the DualShock Playstation Controller, which I have set up to work with my MacBook Pro, as shown in the panel.  Next thing we are going to take a look at is if your gaming controller is connected by Bluetooth, followed by the controller setup screens

Go to the Bluetooth drop down menu on the top of your screen, near the date and time, to see that your controller is connected, which in this case, is my Dualshock 4 controller.  Now go to the controller setup in Steam

Now, following the highlighted circles, click the gear icon for the "settings" menu, then select "manage", then in the drop down menu, select "controller layout" as circled in red highlighter.  Now, you should access the layout screen for your controller, which in my case, is a Dualshock 4 PS4 Controller.  Now, that you have accessed the controller setup menu, let's take a look at it.

The main controller menu shows whether or not my Controller is compatible with Steam, along with what type of Controller I have connected to my computer, then when you click on the "view layout" button you can see where you can reassign or see how the controls are set up on your controller for the game in Steam.  You can manually click on a tab for an assigned button and press a new button on the controller to reassign the button if you wish.

Now that you have the controller setup established, you are good to go with your game controller on Steam, whether its in Mac OS or in a virtual PC via Codeweavers Crossover.  For an updated Guide on Installing Steam in Codeweavers Crossover, I have a written guide and a new video guide for doing so.
